Zegrahm Expeditions Announces the First-Ever Circumnavigation of North America

North and Central American expeditionSEATTLE, WA — Adventure travel company Zegrahm Expeditions announces an industry first: its inaugural Circumnavigation of North America expedition. Flying aboard private aircraft, 36 travelers will complete a full circuit of the continent’s coastline, landing often to explore notable and remote sites along the route.

Such a journey would take months to complete by ship or on commercial flights, and would be cost prohibitive. By using exclusively chartered planes, however, Zegrahm has crafted an itinerary of much shorter duration. This innovative expedition is presented in two parts, a northern route and a southern route, to take advantage of the best seasons: the height of summer in Alaska and Arctic Canada and the dry season in Central America and Mexico. Each itinerary is 22 days long. The northern expedition begins in Seattle on 26 June 2005, and the southern departs Washington D.C. on 03 March 2006.

The focus on the northern route will be the wildlife, native peoples, and history of Alaska, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Labrador, and Newfoundland. Travelers will make an impressive 20 landings in 22 days, seeking out bears, walrus, whales, and seabirds; meeting with Inuits, Haidas, and Inuvialuits; and viewing the gravesites of the Franklin Expedition on Beechey Island and the remains of the Viking settlement at L’Anse aux Meadows.

For this portion of the itinerary, Zegrahm has chartered a Convair 580 and a Dash 7, planes suited to the rugged conditions of the frontier, while providing the utmost comfort for passengers. During the expedition, travelers will also use Twin Otter aircraft to reach more-remote destinations.

On the southern route, travelers will venture into the Yucatán Peninsula, Central America, Oaxaca, and the Baja Peninsula. Highlights of this itinerary include the Mayan ruins at Chichén Itzá, Lamanai, Tikal, and Copán; the Panama Canal; the rain forest of Costa Rica; and the brilliant Sea of Cortez.

A Boeing 737 will transport travelers to the destinations on the southern route. Zegrahm has reconfigured the seating for each of the chartered planes, reducing the number of seats in each, so that participants travel in comfort.

Along with veteran flight crews, a highly experienced expedition team will accompany the journey, and specialists in the native cultures, history, and unique wildlife of the continent will share their knowledge during lectures and excursions. Distances between landings are short (ranging from 30 minutes to less than four hours), which allows for extended time exploring on land.

Price is $32,000 per person, double occupancy for the northern route and $29,800 per person, double occupancy for the southern route. Passengers save $2,000 when they book both departures, for a complete circumnavigation of the continent.
