FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEZegrahm & Eco Expeditions INTERNATIONAL POLAR YEAR LECTURE SERIES 2007 - 2009SEATTLE, Washington—Zegrahm & Eco Expeditions is offering an International Polar Year (IPY) lecture series on select expeditions to both the Arctic and the Antarctic regions now through November 2008. In an effort to advance the understanding of the Earth’s polar regions, the International Polar Year (taking place from March 2007 to March 2009), unites researchers from dozens of countries to study global climate systems and educate the public about its findings. Zegrahm & Eco Expeditions is offering a series of polar expeditions that will bring travelers into the “classroom,” where leaders who have participated in the International Polar Year symposium will update them on this important study. The International Polar Year is a collaborative, multi-national effort aimed at understanding the most remote polar regions on Earth. Scientists and educators from around the globe are gathering data on the biological and chemical oceanography of these relatively unstudied regions. These researchers will then share their findings with students all over the word. This International Polar Year is just the latest in a series. The first one took place in 1882, the second in 1932, and the third in 1957. The last event prompted America’s largest-scale scientific program up to that time, and inspired a generation of researchers. Each IPY has produced a quantum leap forward in the knowledge of how the planet functions; and each resulted in beneficial technological advances. Kevin Clement, International Polar Year lecturer and Zegrahm director and naturalist, will accompany travelers on Zegrahm’s IPY lecture series trips. Clement’s specialty is sub-arctic ecology, but his work as a naturalist and an ecotourism and adventure travel guide has taken him to all seven continents. Clement serves as the Denali Foundation instructor for natural history and as a trainer for the park’s staff of naturalists. In 1995 he became a Certification Instructor for the Wilderness Education Association and in 1997 joined the adjunct faculty of the University of Alaska. Zegrahm Expeditions brings their clients to experience those remote Artic and Antarctic areas first-hand, often transporting and helping support researchers at the same time. Zegrahm is offering eight IPY lecture series trips in the upcoming months. The tour schedule is as follows: Kamchatka to Alaska, June 2007, Spitsbergan to the White Sea, August 2007, Secrets of the White: Russia’s Far West to Arctic Norway, August 2007, Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands, November 2007, Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands, January 2008, High Arctic: Greenland, Ellesmere, Baffin, August 2008, Wild Patagonia, October 2008, Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands, November 2008.
