According to Surfbirds.com, one of the world’s leading and best respected birding Web sites, Jonathan Rossouw—a Zegrahm and Eco Expeditions partner, and Eco-Expeditions field leader—has tallied a record-breaking yearly total of 3,024 bird sightings for 2005.

Surfbirds.com was founded in the late 1990s by a group of birding friends from Britain and the USA. Among serious birders, they are the list-keeper of choice for bird-watching individuals all over the world. In their recent announcement, the site proclaims: “Once again, the annual Surfbirds year listing review reminds us of the wonderful diversity of birds inhabiting this planet.”

A doctor by profession, Jonathan’s passion is wildlife and natural history, which has sent him packing to nearly every corner of the world. After graduating medical school, Jonathan spent 18 months in South America, conducting ornithological surveys in the Andes and working as a resident naturalist in Amazonian rain forest lodges which fueled his fascination with creatures in general and birds in particular. Since then, Jonathan has led expeditions on every continent, has written and co-authored several birding books, and has published articles and photographs in periodicals worldwide.

Jonathan’s comments on the Surfbirds site express it all: “Another brilliant year on the ‘Bird Planet’ produced my highest ever year tally and hauled my annual average for the past 5 years above 2,500. The total reflects travel through almost 30 countries on six continents, of which just over 2,000 species in 25 countries were whilst guiding tours for Eco and Zegrahm Expeditions. The balance came from personal birding trips through New Guinea and southeastern Australia, and local birding around home in South Africa.”

Among Jonathan’s sighting highlights: Guyana —crimson topaz and all five species of potoo; India—sociable lapwing and Baikal teal; Venezuela—black-chested tyrant; Borneo—barred eagle-owl and Bornean ground-cuckoo; New Guinea—forest bittern, Doria’s hawk, eight fire-maned bowerbirds, and 26 birds-of-paradise; Africa (on a Cape Town to Casablanca Eco-Expedition)—Congo river martin, black-headed bee-eater, and white-crested tiger heron; South Africa—lilac-breasted roller (“a fitting 3,000th sighting”).

Here at Zegrahm and Eco we’re both excited—and quite proud—that as of 01 June 2006, Jonathan was again flying high, leading the sighting list with 1,603 birds.

In 2007, Jonathan, along with Holly Faithfull, will lead Eco-Expeditions trips to these destinations: Ethiopia, Borneo, South Africa, Namibia, North Africa, and Bolivia. He will also be a naturalist on Zegrahm’s Islands of Diversity expeditions.
