Reports From The Field

Circumnavigation of New Guinea: Wewak to Port Moresby

Circumnavigation of New Guinea: Wewak to Port Moresby
The name "Asmat" comes from either Asakat, meaning "right man" or Osamat, meaning "man from tree." Amid this jungle terrain live the people of the Asmat, their houses raised on stilts to avoid the mire created by the low elevation and changing tides. These tides, the mountains of the east, and the legends of the fierce ancestry of the peoples have kept the Asmat largely isolated from the world.
