Hector Williams

Professor of Classics and Classical Archaeology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Hector has been directing UBC’s two archaeological projects in Greece (Mytilene on Lesbos and Stymphalos in the NE Peloponnese) since 1982. He began digging in the Mediterranean in 1968 at the University of Chicago’s Kenchreai excavations and subsequently dug at Corinth and Samothrace before taking up his position at UBC in 1970. From 1971-1985 he was assistant director and photographer at UBC’s excavations at Anemurium on the south coast of Turkey and has also worked at the University of Pennsylvania’s dig at Gordion. His research work has taken him on extended trips to Italy, Malta, North Africa, and the Near East. Hector has a special interest in underwater archaeology and was one of the founders of the Underwater Archaeological Society of BC in 1975, as well as serving on the Board of Trustees of the Vancouver Maritime Museum since 1990. He spent ten years on the board of the AIA first as an Academic Trustee and then as President of AIA/Canada and still serves on the Executive Committee of the Vancouver Society of the AIA. Professor Williams has published more than fifty books and articles on archaeological subjects and in 1990 was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in recognition of his contributions to archaeological scholarship.
